The Hendra Virus has become a big concern for horse owners in QLD and Northern NSW. With the potential threat of the virus spreading further south, horse owners need to take some basic precautions, as recommended by the NSW DPI:
- Do not keep horses in paddocks with trees that are flowering or fruiting that might attract fruit bats - If this is impossible, fence or tape off the areas around the trees to reduce the risk - Do not feed or water horses under trees - If you assess your horse's paddock as high risk, consider stabling your horse or moving it to another area - If your horse is showing any signs of coughs, colds or general unwellness, do not take your horse to a club ride.
